Many native peoples going about everyday activities, from bamboo carving and beadwork to weaving, sugar-cane crushing, pepper-growing, and the preparation of bird's nests.

Bako National Park, is a national park in Kuching Division. It is the oldest national park in Sarawak and it established in 1957. Kuching Cat Museum, It is a cat museum and it is founded in 1993 and owned by the Kuching North City Hall. Offbeat attraction with hundreds of exhibits, photos & art related to cats, plus a souvenir shop.

Food is one of the attraction of tourists , I would like to introduce some of the food you must give it a try when you arrive this city. Kuching has a huge selection of Malay , Chinese and Indian food. Most of the Malay and Indian food generally not served as spicy as like west Malaysia.

If you really like spicy , ask for the extra chilly or chilly sauce.

Sarawak Kolo Mee is one of my favourite dishes in Kuching. Local places always bring authentic tastes and flavour. We used to have Kolo Mee as our breakfast , mostly served with meat dumplings or rice vinegar inside , they also add red grilled meat ( char siew ) , stir fried minced pork and scallion served with the noodles. The taste is totally different from Kampua. For the Malay friends , don’t worry , some stalls also replace the pork to beef or fish balls / seafood taufu. It has two flavours, plain ( white ) or with red sauce.

Sio bee / Xiu Mai. Definitely must give it a try. It is bigger in size than dumpling. It wraps with minced pork , mackerel fish and some shrimps. I love it so much because it tastes really yummy and delicious , if compared to Sibu or Sarikei. When I travel to Kuching , I usually buy from Xiu Mai wholesaler and bring back to my hometown.

Sarawak Laksa is one of my favourite foods too. I used to eat once a week. It serves with big portion of bean sprouts , shrimps , omelet strips , shredded chicken , seafood taufu and  rice vermicelli ( also can replace with kampua mee ) . The main ingredients include shrimp soup added with Sarawak laksa paste , garlic , lemongrass and coconut milk.

Sarawak Layer Cake / Kek Lapis , where many West Malaysians not familiar with. It is one of our most famous cakes in East Malaysia. It is multi flavoured variety and colour which you can feel very unique and distinct from other types of layer cake. My brother usually buys some of layer cake to west Malaysia & Singapore and give his friends a try which make them feel surprisingly tasty. They thought layer cake is same as crepe cakes. The answer is absolutely NOPE.

Kampua is not the same as Kolo Mee , it has its own unique flavor. Usually it is served dry with some pork , meat dumplings , and a small bowl of chicken soup. It has two flavours, one is white plain and the other served with black soy sauce.

Tomato Koay Teow is also one of my favourites. It served in tomato sauces gravy with vegetables , char siew, barbecued meat and seafood tofu and shrimps. You can order in crispy noodles or kueh teow or bihun.

Seasonal fruits , black olives or commonly named ‘dabai’, white in colour when unripe but turn black when ripe, can be found wild grown too. Usually it needs to be soaked with lukewarm water around 10 to 15 minutes until they are soft or pack inside a plastic bag and ‘ dry ’ under the sun for half an hour. Cooked black olives give a distinctive aroma if they are used in fried rice. And then you can dress with black soy sauce, a few drops of cooking/olive oil with sugar. YUM !

Judith Khoo
